This system, developed by the psychologist Meredith Belbin, identifies nine key roles that individuals adopt within a team environment. These roles objectively illustrate how individuals operate within teams. Belbin identified that most people adopt a combination of three or four 'natural' or 'unnatural' roles.
The main benefit of using the Belbin system for individuals, teams and organisations is to allow individuals to understand themselves and their teams more effectively. It helps to understand the motivations of individuals within the team and also when considering team management or restructuring.
